Listen to Jean Tan’s Lo-Fi Jazz-Hop Remix of ‘Oak Cherry Wine’, a Collaboration with Korean Artiste 양중은 YANG JUNG EUN

LISTEN TO SINGER-SONGWRITER JEAN TAN’S LO-FI JAZZ-HOP REMIX OF ‘OAK CHERRY WINE’, A COLLABORATION WITH KOREAN ARTISTE 양중은YANG JUNG EUN

As a follow up to her recently-released 5-track EP, ‘Blooms’, Singaporean singer-songwriter Jean Tan will be releasing a remix of her spellbinding single, ‘Oak Cherry Wine’. Produced by Singaporean music producer, Feng Lee, the remix is a collaboration with Korean YouTube artiste 양중은 Yang Jung Eun and is available on all music platforms today on 29 January 2021.

Written in her distinctive, bluesy vein, ‘Oak Cherry Wine’ is a love song interwoven with Jean’s personal experiences. It tells the story of Jean’s personal struggles with kidney disease, and of the man who stood by her in the celebratory and difficult moments alike. Like all truly good romance stories, the song’s lyrics has a bittersweet tinge, and is all the better for it – a love that is tried and true.

Marrying Jean’s lyrical sensitivity with 양중은Yang Jung Eun’s dulcet vocals, this refreshing take stays true to its original composition. The remix is elevated by a new arrangement – a lo-fi beat, the jazz-hop push and pull, the syncopated neo-soul electric piano – becoming more than just the sum of its parts. “It was a surreal experience working across borders while the world was on lockdown for much of 2020. The collab took off really well because June Eun is such an amazing and friendly guy! I guess we were just trying to make the best out of a crazy year”, says Jean Tan on working together with 양중은Yang Jung Eun.

Jean Tan will also be releasing an accompanying music video of the newly remixed version on 14 Feb 2021, made available on her YouTube channel. Directed by Stockholm-based Singaporean film director, Mandy Tay, the video features a pair of lovers dancing through the quotidian scenes of Stockholm city.

Traditional meets contemporary, and ballet meets street dance, as the couple whirl around each other in a dream state, swirling like a glass of (oak cherry) wine.

Jean Tan New Single “Fly” and Lyric Video

Jean Tan New Single Fly and Lyric Video

LISTEN TO THE SPIRITED NEW ACOUSTIC JAZZ SINGLE BY SINGAPORE SINGER-SONGWRITER JEAN TAN

Singapore singer-songwriter Jean Tan is back with “Fly”, the first release of a string of three singles on 10 October 2019 on all major digital streaming platforms via Leeway. Two more singles in a similar vein will be released through 2020, with the trio of songs forming a mini folk-jazz collective.

For production and arrangement, Jean worked with renown local R&B artist and multi-instrumentalist Dru Chen. Dru’s inherent soulfulness yet sensitivity to the stylistics of pop music have produced a beautiful and well-balanced track that puts Jean’s jazzy vocal expressions at the forefront. The track also enlisted the talents of Euntaek Kim on keys and Ben Poh on the double bass, who contributed to the stellar improvisations on the lively track.

While Jean’s last genre-crossing EP “Hideaway” – released in 2017 and featuring the hit single “Crowns” – explored the worlds of folktronica, “Fly” sees her returning to a familiar arena of folk-jazz. With its uncommon time and syncopation, the rhythms of “Fly” are not unlike the fluttering of an exhilarated heartbeat, eager to explore the world and see as a child would.

After all, ‘Fly’ was written when things picked up for Jean after a long period of kidney illness. It is a picture of spring after winter, where life re-emerges in all its sights, sounds, and tastes. The movement of the song resembles the small, trembling steps of a butterfly, desirous to feel the world again.

Along with the simple yet not sparse instrumentation – fingersnaps, light folk guitar comps and the subtle touch of an electric piano – “Fly” is joy, summarized. More than that, it feels natural, a settling into a style that Jean was always meant to flourish in. It feels like a coming home, so much so that when she sings:

Fly, go on dare defy
Trembling tide in the dark of night
See the world
See the world

…one almost believes her. Perhaps we too, can step off the edge and live. Fly.

Lyrics of Fly

Verse 1:
Fly to your open skies
Alive with fire
So burning bright
See the world
See the world

Fly, on your wings up high
Shine that light
Oh, with all your might
See the world
See the world

Chorus:
Wild whirl
A wild whirl
A child’s world awaits
A while more
Soon you’ll find the magic
You were meant to see
Were meant to be

Verse 2:
Fly, take your leave, ignite
Free those wings
Oh, butterfly
See the world
See the world

Fly, go on dare defy
Trembling tide in the dark of night
See the world
See the world

Chorus:
Wild whirl
A wild whirl
A child’s world awaits
A while more
Soon you’ll find the magic
You were meant to see
Were meant to be

Bridge:
Fly, don’t you cry
Look up high
Your skies are alive
Try, you’ll be fine
Years gone by
Are coming back to you
Before your very eyes

Verse 3:
Fly, take your leave, ignite
Free those wings
Oh, butterfly
See the world
See the world

See the world
See the world
See the world
See the world

More than 100,000 views for Jean Tan on Generation Grit in less than 2 weeks! Below is the the video and a special shout out to Tam Mei and Samuel for producing, filming and editing.

We are stoked by the favour that The Straits Times have given to Jean in telling her story and the responses received. Jean is very encouraged by the love and concern from netizens who took time to write to her. We too, while reading the comments and private messages, are touched by the love.

Jean Tan on Generation Grit Comments

“A friend once shared with me that suffering is often the gap between what you expect and what is reality. And when we can’t come to terms with that gap, we throw ourselves into bewilderment or depression. So for myself, learning to accept reality for what it is, learning to accept that there are limitations to myself at this point of time. But also not stopping there, because if I just lower all my expectations and I stay at that point, I’m never gonna get better. So it’s kinda holding the two in balance.” (3:00-3:25)

Jean has been an inspiration to us in SOOS OIO in more ways than one. While holding a full-time job, she seeks excellence in her music and craft. This persevering meekness is a force that pushes her and us to take a step at a time, regardless how slow or hard. We hope to spread Jean’s story to those who need encouragement especially when life throws us a curve ball. Stay tuned for more of Jean’s updates by following her social media @jeantanmusic.

“HIDEAWAY” Chill Out and Muse Jean Tan’s EP Release this Friday 27 October

Hideaway EP Cover Art

“HIDEAWAY” Chill Out and Muse Jean Tan’s EP Release this Friday 27 October

27 October, 2017 – Following the releases of ‘Crowns’ and more recently, ‘Walls,’ Singapore singer-songwriter Jean Tan’s EP, Hideaway, will be fully released on 27 October, 2017 on all major digital streaming platforms via Umami Records.

To mark the launch of Hideaway, Jean will livestream a performance on Facebook from a secret location on Saturday 28 October 2017 at 8.30pm. Opening the event will be sets from talented singer-songwriters JAWN and Stacy Tan. Fans can catch the Facebook Live via Jean’s page and https://www.twitch.tv/soosoio from 8.30pm onwards on 28 October.

Hideaway reconciles spiritualist themes of mortality and renewal against a electronic-acoustic soundscape that belies the album’s lyrics. For Jean, Hideaway was written as a salve during a time of struggle and convalescence from illness. Recounting the journey, Jean notes –

I was diagnosed with kidney disease at 24, which catalysed a subsequent loss of things over the next 5-6 years in the areas of work, relationships, and lifestyle. I lost the ability to do the things I love, like make music and travel; at times, even walking, eating, and speaking was difficult, leading to long periods of social isolation.

In that secret place, away from the world – I met my raw, barenaked self, stripped away from the things I valued and which defined me at that point.  I came face to face with who I really was, and let erupt the storm of emotions and questions I’d bottled inside for a long time.

Listeners have already experienced ‘Crowns’ (which quickly surpassed 100,000 streaming plays within the first couple months of release) and ‘Walls’ (produced by Cascine artist et aliae and featured former-The Steve McQueens saxophonist Fabian Lim). Three new songs in the album complete the circle. ‘Dandelion’ (also produced by et aliae) is about pressing on and being radiant even in the harshest conditions; ‘Blooms’ pens an honest conversation between the writer and God, confronting disappointment and finding fragile hope in the beginnings of spring; ‘Hide Away’, the title track, is about finding significance in the process – being in one’s own secret place, in the winter of the soul, to heal.

Track list:

  1. Crowns
  2. Walls
  3. Hide Away
  4. Dandelion
  5. Blooms
