The Game Addiction Talk

The Game Addiction Talk

The Game Addiction Talk

No one sets out to be addicted when he/she first plays a game. Unknowingly over time, a bond is formed with the game which makes it hard for the gamer to pull away.

At the 72nd World Health Assembly, 194 members of the WHO unanimously agreed to adopt the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11), which includes ‘gaming disorder’ as a recognised disease. The new classifications will come into effect on 1 January 2022. Below is WHO video on Gaming Disorder.

SOOS OIO Game Addiction Talk seeks to help youths, and even adults, understand some basic game design psychology that answers the question “WHY games can be addictive?” Some patients in the hospitals are given huge dosage of heroin for treatment but they never become drug addicts. Similarly, the game itself is not the only reason for addiction. Through understanding the “why”, the youths are better equipped to make wiser choices in games.

Through the story of Ruth Lim, our in-house “game addict”, we seek to help students to be more aware of their pre-disposition to game addiction. Ruth’s personal struggles and victories brings life to the information about game design & pre-disposition to addiction, making it more real and relatable to your students.

The objective of this talk is to help students understand their power of choice. They can be in control of games and their life when they understand games and themselves better.

Ruth + Dota2 + FIFA18

About the Speaker – Ruth Lim

Ruth Lim is a coach for DOTA 2 & FIFA 18, and the lead trainer for DOTA 2 at the Esports Academy. Her passion for gaming led her to obtain a Game Development Diploma in Game & Entertainment Technology and further obtained a Bachelors in Computer Science while sustaining a keen interest in gaming.

Game was a way of life for Ruth. She spent extensive long hours in a game, determined to reach the goals she set for herself. This determination has impact and effects on her life. Addicted to game but yet not an addict is a thin line of balance.

Jason YOLT Story on MediaCorp

There was so much excitement waiting for 11 May 2018 9.30pm to come. It was amazing to watch Jason YOLT Story on MediaCorp Channel 5 on television. A story that we are so familar with, yet once again we are impacted by the fact that Jason YOLT is a walking miracle. Not only that he is alive and very well, but is ready to fulfill the purpose of his second chance in life.

It is our honour to be working with Jason YOLT, who is both purpose-driven and down-to-earth, shaped by the near death accident and ardous recovery process. An even more powerful part of his story is his ability to forgive the man who nearly took his life and his legs. He walked his talk about choices – choosing to focus on the positive instead of the negative. The footage of Jason having a chat with the man who knocked him down in all smiles and at peace is a testimony of a wholesome recovery of not just physical, but also within his soul. He is a reminder to us that there is little reason to complain but to be thankful.

Below is  the 30min documentary video of Jason YOLT story featured in “On the Red Dot 2018 – EP 6 on 11 May 2018 Friday – Trouble Abroad 2.”

Jason YOLT Now

Jason YOLT is now a motivational speaker to both youths and coporate. He draws out life lessons from his first hand experiences, sprinkled with little surprises and fun moments, making sessions with him memorable and impactful. Below is a short video of Jason YOLT in action as a motivational speaker.

We appreciate the effort of the whole team and crew of MediaCorp for putting together this video with such skillful storytelling. Thank you for flying Jason to Cambodia to find closure through the meeting with the man who knocked him.

Jean Tan on Generation Grit

More than 100,000 views for Jean Tan on Generation Grit in less than 2 weeks! Below is the the video and a special shout out to Tam Mei and Samuel for producing, filming and editing.

We are stoked by the favour that The Straits Times have given to Jean in telling her story and the responses received. Jean is very encouraged by the love and concern from netizens who took time to write to her. We too, while reading the comments and private messages, are touched by the love.

Jean Tan on Generation Grit Comments

“A friend once shared with me that suffering is often the gap between what you expect and what is reality. And when we can’t come to terms with that gap, we throw ourselves into bewilderment or depression. So for myself, learning to accept reality for what it is, learning to accept that there are limitations to myself at this point of time. But also not stopping there, because if I just lower all my expectations and I stay at that point, I’m never gonna get better. So it’s kinda holding the two in balance.” (3:00-3:25)

Jean has been an inspiration to us in SOOS OIO in more ways than one. While holding a full-time job, she seeks excellence in her music and craft. This persevering meekness is a force that pushes her and us to take a step at a time, regardless how slow or hard. We hope to spread Jean’s story to those who need encouragement especially when life throws us a curve ball. Stay tuned for more of Jean’s updates by following her social media @jeantanmusic.

“HIDEAWAY” Chill Out and Muse Jean Tan’s EP Release this Friday 27 October

“HIDEAWAY” Chill Out and Muse Jean Tan’s EP Release this Friday 27 October

27 October, 2017 – Following the releases of ‘Crowns’ and more recently, ‘Walls,’ Singapore singer-songwriter Jean Tan’s EP, Hideaway, will be fully released on 27 October, 2017 on all major digital streaming platforms via Umami Records.

To mark the launch of Hideaway, Jean will livestream a performance on Facebook from a secret location on Saturday 28 October 2017 at 8.30pm. Opening the event will be sets from talented singer-songwriters JAWN and Stacy Tan. Fans can catch the Facebook Live via Jean’s page and https://www.twitch.tv/soosoio from 8.30pm onwards on 28 October.

Hideaway reconciles spiritualist themes of mortality and renewal against a electronic-acoustic soundscape that belies the album’s lyrics. For Jean, Hideaway was written as a salve during a time of struggle and convalescence from illness. Recounting the journey, Jean notes –

I was diagnosed with kidney disease at 24, which catalysed a subsequent loss of things over the next 5-6 years in the areas of work, relationships, and lifestyle. I lost the ability to do the things I love, like make music and travel; at times, even walking, eating, and speaking was difficult, leading to long periods of social isolation.

In that secret place, away from the world – I met my raw, barenaked self, stripped away from the things I valued and which defined me at that point.  I came face to face with who I really was, and let erupt the storm of emotions and questions I’d bottled inside for a long time.

Listeners have already experienced ‘Crowns’ (which quickly surpassed 100,000 streaming plays within the first couple months of release) and ‘Walls’ (produced by Cascine artist et aliae and featured former-The Steve McQueens saxophonist Fabian Lim). Three new songs in the album complete the circle. ‘Dandelion’ (also produced by et aliae) is about pressing on and being radiant even in the harshest conditions; ‘Blooms’ pens an honest conversation between the writer and God, confronting disappointment and finding fragile hope in the beginnings of spring; ‘Hide Away’, the title track, is about finding significance in the process – being in one’s own secret place, in the winter of the soul, to heal.

Track list:

  1. Crowns
  2. Walls
  3. Hide Away
  4. Dandelion
  5. Blooms

Awesome time at Zandari Festa

We have been back in Singapore for almost 2 weeks and we are still having Seoul hangover. Yes, KBBQ anytime!

A huge thank you to Zandari Festa for the special Singapore and Korea Collab Stage. We were pleasantly surprised to see the Zandari banners on lamp posts all over Hongdae area with special mention of DanZZan stage performance. Appreciate all the kindness that has been extended to us.

The night before our Zandari performance, we had a hang out session in our Hongdae airbnb house. So glad that Campfire and Foundation Music dropped by. You have to check out SGCampfire music! It was a great time over Korean fried chicken and beer, and of course ended by making music together. So surreal to be doing this with a whole bunch of awesome Singaporeans in Seoul! Below is the video of the music jam live stream we had. Sweet memories!

The next day started early at Make Up For Ever Seoul at 8.30am because it was show day! Appreciate all four make up artistes taking time to make sure HubbaBubbas, Jean Tan and Becka look their best when they should be home helping their families prepare for Chuseok, an important Korea festival in their calendar.

This is the first time all three Singapore artistes played for a music festival in Korea. Not everything worked out the way we planned it to, but the artistes adjusted and rose up to the occasion. Love how all three artistes enjoyed themselves on stage and off stage. Seeing them shine on stage that Sunday afternoon at Zandari Festa is beyond words!

It has been slightly more than one year since we started putting this album and project together. There were moments when we wonder what will come out of this. Besides performing in Seoul at Zandari Festa, all three Singapore artistes have their albums/EPs launched in Korean music stores, a bonus beyond the track in DanZZan Date. For the Singaporeans to perform in Seoul makes a sweet end to the project. Although operationally this is the end, we choose to see this as a start. A start for many more things to come, in more ways than one. This is definitely not the end of the artistes' music journey, but a milestone. We hope the exposure through this project will launch them out to greater stages and reach.

We must make mention of Leeway Music & Media, who went all the way to make this possible. Not an easy feat and you got the Singaporeans into Korea!

Here's a short video summary of the DanZZan stage in Zandari Festa.

We are still editing the video footages from the artistes performances at Zandari. Will release them once they are ready. Follow us on our social media for updates. Below are a few shoots of the venue at Zandari Festa. For more photos, you can go to our Facebook Album.

First Singapore and Korea Collaboration at Seoul Zandari Festa 2017

DanZZan Album CoverFirst Singapore and Korea Collaboration Featuring HubbaBubbas, Jean Tan and Becka at Seoul’s Indie Music Festival – Zandari Festa 2017

HubbaBubbas, Jean Tan and Becka will be sharing the stage with Korean artistes — G-Urban, Gonne Choi and Dawn of the Day at Zandari Festa this October. The first time these artistes performed together was at SHINE Fest this year at both the ION Stage and *SCAPE Bandstand with the launch of the Singapore-Korea collaboration album, Sweet & Salty Date (단짠 데이트), DanZZan Date in Korean.

Sweet & Salty Date (단짠 데이트) or DanZZan Date is a project by SOOS OIO (Singapore) and Leeway Music & Media Inc (Korea). The objective of the album is to bring indie artistes of Singapore and Korea together to increase their reach collectively. DanZZan Date means Sweet and Salty Date in Korean. Each of the eight singer-songwriters wrote a song on the theme of food and love, expressed in their own unique interpretation and style. Becka sang about her favourite Singapore food in So Sedap, Jean Tan captures the sweetness and saltiness of Waiting for Love, and we will leave you to unravel HubbaBubbas’ Infinite Hand Hug Loop. As a sophomore album of this collaboration, listeners can expect a light pop listening experience with a blend of unique style and personalities of the eight artistes. This album also features two bonus tracks from two special guests Jennifer Chung (United States) and Joyce Chu (Malaysia).

The EPs of HubbaBubbas and Becka – Amy(gdala) and BECKA, were also launched in Korean music stores this September.
