“My child is gaming too much!” is a common statement we hear from many parents, especially during this stay home period. Gaming has become an integral part of life for many. The concern escalates when at the 72nd World Health Assembly, 194 members of the WHO unanimously agreed to adopt the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11), which includes ‘gaming disorder’ as a recognised disease. The new classifications will come into effect on 1 January 2022. Below is WHO video on Gaming Disorder.

Why are games so attractive? How do we keep up with the increasing number of games? How can we make sense out of this sea of games? Join Ruth Lim in a journey into the world of games. We will explore the various types of games and game genres that are popular among the youth, breaking down the various components of game design.  Gamers are not all the same, and they have different motivations categorised by their Player Types. By understanding your child’s world of games and the motivations of your child as a gamer, you can understand your child and their needs better to start off conversations and deepen the relationship.

The cause of addiction is not only from the substance, in our case, gaming. It happens when deeper human needs are not met. Join Nicholas Lim to learn more about addiction from a psychologist point of view. Through the explanation of the brain development of youths, Nicholas will also explore strategies for parents to communicate and connect with gamers.

The session will be moderated by Pauline Phoon, the founder of SOOS OIO LLP and COMEBACK PTE LTD.

Below is an animation about Addiction based on Bruce Alexander’s research about the cause of addiction.

Jean Tan New Single “Fly” and Lyric Video

Jean Tan New Single Fly and Lyric Video

LISTEN TO THE SPIRITED NEW ACOUSTIC JAZZ SINGLE BY SINGAPORE SINGER-SONGWRITER JEAN TAN

Singapore singer-songwriter Jean Tan is back with “Fly”, the first release of a string of three singles on 10 October 2019 on all major digital streaming platforms via Leeway. Two more singles in a similar vein will be released through 2020, with the trio of songs forming a mini folk-jazz collective.

For production and arrangement, Jean worked with renown local R&B artist and multi-instrumentalist Dru Chen. Dru’s inherent soulfulness yet sensitivity to the stylistics of pop music have produced a beautiful and well-balanced track that puts Jean’s jazzy vocal expressions at the forefront. The track also enlisted the talents of Euntaek Kim on keys and Ben Poh on the double bass, who contributed to the stellar improvisations on the lively track.

While Jean’s last genre-crossing EP “Hideaway” – released in 2017 and featuring the hit single “Crowns” – explored the worlds of folktronica, “Fly” sees her returning to a familiar arena of folk-jazz. With its uncommon time and syncopation, the rhythms of “Fly” are not unlike the fluttering of an exhilarated heartbeat, eager to explore the world and see as a child would.

After all, ‘Fly’ was written when things picked up for Jean after a long period of kidney illness. It is a picture of spring after winter, where life re-emerges in all its sights, sounds, and tastes. The movement of the song resembles the small, trembling steps of a butterfly, desirous to feel the world again.

Along with the simple yet not sparse instrumentation – fingersnaps, light folk guitar comps and the subtle touch of an electric piano – “Fly” is joy, summarized. More than that, it feels natural, a settling into a style that Jean was always meant to flourish in. It feels like a coming home, so much so that when she sings:

Fly, go on dare defy
Trembling tide in the dark of night
See the world
See the world

…one almost believes her. Perhaps we too, can step off the edge and live. Fly.

Lyrics of Fly

Verse 1:
Fly to your open skies
Alive with fire
So burning bright
See the world
See the world

Fly, on your wings up high
Shine that light
Oh, with all your might
See the world
See the world

Chorus:
Wild whirl
A wild whirl
A child’s world awaits
A while more
Soon you’ll find the magic
You were meant to see
Were meant to be

Verse 2:
Fly, take your leave, ignite
Free those wings
Oh, butterfly
See the world
See the world

Fly, go on dare defy
Trembling tide in the dark of night
See the world
See the world

Chorus:
Wild whirl
A wild whirl
A child’s world awaits
A while more
Soon you’ll find the magic
You were meant to see
Were meant to be

Bridge:
Fly, don’t you cry
Look up high
Your skies are alive
Try, you’ll be fine
Years gone by
Are coming back to you
Before your very eyes

Verse 3:
Fly, take your leave, ignite
Free those wings
Oh, butterfly
See the world
See the world

See the world
See the world
See the world
See the world

Parents Seminar – Understanding Gamers, Games and Game Addiction

“My child is gaming too much!” is a common statement we hear from many parents.

The gamers’ world stands apart from the real world, which makes it extremely attractive. The difference in the gamers’ world and the real world creates a gap between parents and gamers. In this two-part series of Parents Seminar, we firstly bring together gamers and parents in a panel for an interactive session. The second session delves deeper into the basic science behind game design and game addiction.

A gamer is anyone who games. This includes adults and even grandparents who play games like Bejeweled and Pokémon. When adults play games, it is generally not considered too much of a problem. For children and youths, concerns arise. SOOS OIO has been actively looking for ways to mitigate the negative effects of gaming and addiction while trying to harness the positive of gaming. This two-part series for parents are one of our initiatives to bridge parents and gamers.

Dates and Times:

SESSION 1: GAMING & FAMILY – A PANEL OF PARENTS AND GAMERS

14 Sept 2019 (Sat)
10.30am-1.00pm

We are starting this two-part series with a panel of parents and gamers to discuss how gaming affects family. Like it or not, games are here to stay. Find out more about the different gamer types and their gaming motivations in relation to their Myers Briggs Type Indicator. This can provide much insight to your child’s gaming motivations and type of gamer to better interpret their behaviours. Through conversations with the panel of parents and gamers, we hope their stories and experiences can be references to manage this gaming inclusion, or to some, intrusion, in our families.

SESSION 2: UNDERSTANDING GAMES AND GAME ADDICTION

21 September 2019 (Sat)
11.00am-1.00pm

Why are games so attractive? How do we keep up with the increasing number of games? How can we make sense out of this sea of games?

To prevent drug abuse and addiction, the knowledge about the composite of the drug and its effects helps us frame our perception towards drug. This is the first guard against addiction. Similarly, to prevent game addiction, we need to understand games and its effects on us. Our approach to this topic is first to understand games before going into the psychology of addiction, more specifically to games.

Join Ruth Lim in a journey into the world of games. We will explore the various types of games and game genres that are popular among the young people, breaking down the various components of game design. By understanding your child’s world of games, you might understand your child and their needs to start off conversations and deepen the relationship.

The cause of addiction is not only from the substance, in our case, gaming. It happens when deeper human needs are not met. Join Nicholas Lim to learn more about addiction and “positive addiction” from a psychologist point of view.

Below is an animation about Addiction based on Bruce Alexander’s research about the cause of addiction.
